Yoga for the Wrists (from Tara Stiles)

My wrists have been bothering me for some time now.

I work a lot in front of the computer and it has gotten to the point where I often feel pain right at the wrist area which sometimes radiates upward toward my elbow.

Then I found this video by Tara Stiles, a Ford model, who does yoga. She has done many yoga videos and over time, I will feature her podcasts.

For those of you who, like me, are desk-bound and who wish to avoid the onset of carpal tunnel syndrome, these short exercises may be of help.

Asana Adjustments – Love It or Hate It

I initially thought I was off to a bad start at class tonight.

After some warm-up stretches, Pio made us do Purvottanasana (Upward Plank Pose) .

From Day 1 of starting yoga, this was a regular pose. There were days when it came easy. Not tonight. For some reason, I had placed my hands behind me but not far enough. As I came up into the pose, I felt something was wrong. But instead of coming back down and correcting it, I tried to hold myself in that pose. Whew, DIFFICULT!

That was not the end of it. As I came out of the pose, Pio directly addressed me asking, “How did you feel, Jane? Mahirap ba? (Was it difficult?).” I nodded yes. You just can’t fake anything with a seasoned teacher. By just glancing at me, he knew my hands were not placed well and that I was having a hard time keeping myself up. Pio then went into a short talk about not trying to hold the pose but instead, when you feel it is wrong, it is all right to come out of it, adjust, then go back into the pose. Oh shucks, I thought to myself. What a way to start the class! Doing it all wrong!

But deliberately shoving that thought aside, I decided this would be a class where I would focus on my posture and alignment. And true enough, Pio once again came to the fore and for some freaky reason, read my mind, sensed my aura (or maybe I was really that transparent!!!). Because…..the whole class was all about….adjustments!

As we went from one asana to another, there was nothing new sequence-wise. We were just doing the regular routine. But with a twist. Pio kept going around the room twisting us into place, adjusting here and there, correcting hand and feet positions, and pushing us further down during forward bends to challenge our bodies to go beyond our “can” levels.

A Yogic Mission at the Workplace (?)

When I landed an opportunity to return to the labor force as a consultant for a Makati firm, I initially hesitated. And it was not so much worrying about making a comeback after being away from work for several years. My reluctance stemmed more from the concern that it would suck me back into a rat race that would take me away from yoga and bring on once more the ill effects that stress does to one’s mind and body. I know. I have been in that rut and vowed to never allow myself to be in that situation again.

The last two weeks, however, seemed to affirm this fear. Except for one yoga class the other week, I basically missed all my yoga classes up to the present time.

However, firmly believing that nothing happens without a purpose, I am gradually seeing things beyond just my missing classes.

At a lunch reunion with 2 of my former colleagues from SGV (one of whom whom works in my present company where she is a top executive), both of them expressed a strong desire to try yoga.

At that same lunch, I learned that the wife of another consultant just a few desks away from me, is a full-time yoga teacher at Yoga Manila. And providentially, the Makati location of Yoga Manila is right behind my building! All I had to do was cross the street! A short chat with this consultant after lunch made me realize that rather than totally miss yoga on days when I could not get out of Makati early enough to beat the traffic to Ortigas, I had an alternative right at my office area. I could work and still work out!

Of course, my teacher Pio will always be my yogi of choice at the Vinyasa Yoga Center and I truly enjoy the company and energy of my yogini mates there. However, as my 2 friends prefer to do yoga closer to the office and want to do it with me, I am now beginning to wonder if indeed there is a higher purpose to this resurrected career. After all, where would yoga’s benefits redound the greatest but to people such as my friends and colleagues who are absorbed in work, take lunches at their desks and basically have a life that revolve around office and home.

In a recent Metro magazine, an article featured 3 women doing yoga. One of them was a manager in Accenture (which is now the name of a company I worked for in the 90s). This is such a paradigm shift since these types of activities were not available to overworked employees like me then and I had to buy a gym membership in order to get some form of exercise. Yoga is beginning to make its presence known among those who are looking for calm and tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle of the daily office grind.

As I walk the streets of Makati and meet people who scurry here and there, wearing a look that tells you they are harried and stressed out, I wonder if there are indeed opportunities to share what one has learned and continues to learn from one’s yoga practice. Can a student be a catalyst? Can an upstart yogini like me be a stone that starts a ripple in the workplace?

Pio used to tell us not to be content staying in one’s comfort zone. I tended to choose the same spot at every class and it did take some time before I allowed myself to transfer. I also noticed that I used to call my friends and check if they were attending class, as though my going was dependent on their being there. Slowly, I found I could go to classes on other days and time slots even if I knew no one. Or do self yoga even without the combined energy of my yogini friends. Now, am I being led to bring people to yoga even if it means I could not bring them all the way to Ortigas? Weaning, detaching, letting go…it can be uncomfortable, to tell the truth. And at the moment, given a choice, I would much rather continue my practice at Vinyasa and bring people there.

But again, when I recall some of what Pio has been trying to impart, I realize that in each and every one of us lies a mission. As Christians, we have the mission to spread the Good News of Christ to all those who need to hear His Word; likewise, yoga’s benefits are not for our selves alone. We must radiate it outwards to others. And it is only when we take ourselves out of the comfort which is our yogini circles that we can reach out to those who most need its healing effects.

Pio Baquiran (Vinyasa Yoga Center) – Updated Apr. 2011

(Update: Vinyasa Yoga Center is currently closed already but Pio continues to teach in a private location. For those interested in getting in touch with Pio, you may now reach him at 0905-2652688 or at pio_baquiran@yahoo.com).

I have long been planning to compile a Who’s Who of yoga instructors in the Philippines but never got around to starting. So let me begin close to home with none other than my own yoga teacher, Pio Baquiran.

In the classes that Pio conducts, breathing (or pranayama) is paramount as it is the soul of the Vinyasa Yoga Style. He begins by putting on calming and soothing music. The Vinyasa yoga style integrates breath and movement, awareness and alignment, strength and flexibility which connect poses (or asanas) through the breath to “stoke the fire” inside the body and achieve balance.

Pio’s classes progress from warm-up basic yoga poses, to sun salutations (asanas that stretch and heat up the body), to other yoga poses — all the while stressing the breathing rhythm that needs to be maintained throughout. The class ends with a relaxing prone pose and meditation in which one’s senses are brought to a subliminal stage in order for the body to gain the full benefits of the Vinyasa session.

Sessions can address the beginner practitioner as well as those ready for more advanced and challenging poses. Pio is very attentive to his students’ alignment and does not fail to correct and adjust whenever necessary. This attention and care, even while in a group class, makes his classes one of the most phenomenal and experiential within the metro.

I Got My Own Yoga Jane!

Several blog posts back, I wrote about wanting to get a bender doll called Yoga Jane.

Joni, a friend of my balikbayan friend Nookie, who just happened to be a very active yogini in the Los Angeles area, and who was introduced to me by Nookie via her blog, wrote to me saying she had bought me the Yoga Jane doll and was sending it through Nookie.

At our lunch reunion yesterday, Nookie gave me THE doll. I love my Yoga Jane! I think she will inspire me to continue working on my more difficult poses (asanas) and be a constant reminder of the benefits I have been reaping from my yoga practice.

Here she is doing Trikonasana (Triangle Pose):

Mi Amiga, Elsie, Makes It As Cover Girl!

I am so happy to announce that one of my online, blogger, yogini friends (Elsie Escobar) has finally made her dream come true — to be featured as the cover girl in a magazine in the U.K.

I was just new to WordPress then and had began blogging about my yoga journey. To my surprise, I checked my comment page one day and there was a post from Elsie. She had found my site (most likely through my “yoga” tag). I replied to her and then began visiting her site regularly. I have listened to some of her podcasts, linked her Flickr photos to my sidebar here, and corresponded with her on some questions I had on yoga.

Her blog post enables you to download the issue where she is featured. Try to read all about her there. She is truly an amazing yogini who has taken yoga beyond just her practice and into the podcasting world. She has even been an ambassador for Lululemon, a leading store for yoga wear. And despite all this “fame”, she remains down to earth and yogeeky enough to correspond with a start-up yogini like me.

Lack of Hydration = Possible Kidney Stones

I had one theory in this whole kidney stone situation which I posed to my urologist prior to being discharged:

Did my lack of hydration after doing yoga have any effect on the rapid increase in my kidney stone size?

You see, I am not a conscious water drinker. I sip water here and there but do not come close to the suggested 6-8 glasses of water a day. And yet, when I do yoga, I sweat A LOT!

The salt/water imbalance theory came to my mind as I lay on my hospital bed the night before the stone blasting procedure. If I had salt in my system as a result of natural food intake, and if more water left me as sweat, then it would surely cause the salt content in my system to increase compared to the water content, thus loading up my body with more salt than it needed!

My urologist told me there was a possible connection indeed between my stones and my lack of hydration. And tonight, as I surfed the web, I came across this site that states: ” One of the main reasons that people get kidney stones is a lack of hydration. “The solution to pollution is dilution!” You must drink plenty of water daily in order to provide your body with enough liquids to flush out your system effectively. More water may be necessary if you live in a hot or dry climate or if you work in a very hot environment.”

Another site confirms the theory, stating: ” Chronic dehydration(lack of body water) can lead to kidney stones.

  • Very hot weather,
  • Heavy sweating, or
  • Too little fluid intake contribute to the formation of kidney stones.
  • People who work outdoors in hot weather and who do not drink enough fluids may increase their risk of getting stones.”

My lack of hydration is indeed a very possible culprit.

So to those of you practicing yoga regularly and frequently and, if like me, you live in a tropical climate — take your cue from what I underwent. Drink A LOT of water after your yoga class to bring your body back into balance and flush out any elements that could cause stone formation.

My painful experience is one I hope I will never have to go through again. My goal now is to become a regular water drinker if I want to continue doing yoga and stay free of stones.

May you also stay healthy and stone-free!

How To Survive 2 Yoga-less Weeks

Tomorrow, June 14, I will undergo a medical procedure to blast my kidney stones (one of which is 1 cm in diameter). The doctor will leave a stent inside me for two weeks. Translation: NO YOGA!

To make up for that impending absence, I hit the yoga classes this week. I went Tuesday, Wednesday, and last night, I did an hour of yoga at the gym followed by another hour at the yoga center.

My yoga mates who heard about my routine this week asked if I was crazy or suffering separation anxiety from yoga. It’s a little of both, I think.

When you imbibe yoga into your life, it really becomes an extension of YOU as a person. When I am stressed out, I resort to pranayama (deep breathing) techniques. When I find myself seating in front of the computer for a LONG time (the “sickness” of bloggers), I find myself stretching and bending using asanas. Even when I eat, I am now more aware of what is healthy and what is not (though I must confess that I still eat what is not really that healthy, just because it tastes SOOOO good!).

I know I will survive the next 2 weeks without yoga. But it does not mean I won’t miss it, miss my teacher Pio, miss my yoga mates. I will….like hell! But instead of getting all worked up over missing it, I can now use the yogic attitude for times like these. I can adapt the perspective of accepting that there is a time for everything and just be happy with looking forward to resuming classes again.

See all of you again in two weeks, my dear friends! And thank you for keeping me in your prayers.

Namaste!
