A Yogini gets the Best “Prank It Fwd” for April Fools Day

I love happy stories and this one deserves a short blog post.

Yesterday being April Fools Day saw a lot of pranks online. Many were harmless and just elicited laughter. There were a few though that were so good that you had to read the articles carefully to spot the prank items. And I also became addicted to Google’s awesome search for the Pokemon Master by having all of us searching through Google Maps for countries where 150 Pokemon were scattered and trying to catch as many of them as you could within 24 hours. And while I haven’t heard of any, some people also like to play not-so-nice pranks sometimes during this day.

But somewhere in the United States, a yogini was getting the best “Prank It Fwd”.

Book review: Pick Your Yoga Practice by Meagan McCrary

“I want to try yoga. Can you suggest what style is best for me?”

It’s pretty tough when you need to face such a question because there is not just one style of yoga nor any one “best” style. Way back in 2006 when I first discovered yoga, there were only very few styles available in Manila – ashtanga, bikram and vinyasa. Maybe one or two more. Nothing else. So we did not really have that many choicesNow there are so many different yoga styles and offerings available and studios are all over the place!

Listen to Integrative Medicine Experts for FREE! (Nov. 21-30, 2013)

I’m giving you a heads-up on this one so you can block your calendars.

From Nov. 21-30, 2013, we can listen to several experts on Integrative Medicine speak about new approaches to healing that combine Western or conventional medicine as we know it these days with other modalities that focus on holistic wellness rather than just treating symptoms of diseases. I plan to make time to listen to as many of these experts as possible because I believe even more than ever now that everything we take into our bodies affect us. Even stress which can come in many forms and is thrown upon us in different situations, wreaks havoc inside the body and produces harmful free radicals that eventually can lead to disease.

Here is an excerpt explaining the concept of Integrative Medicine as taken from the Integrative Medicine Online World Summit website:

“What is Integrative Medicine and META-Health and how can it help me?

Integrative Medicine is an approach to treatment and care that integrates conventional medicine with a broader understanding of illness, healing and wellness and looks at all available methods that may be a value in treating disease and illness.

It takes into account the whole person and all aspects of lifestyle and restores the focus of medicine on health and healing and away from disease symptom management. It’s a practical strategy that puts the patient at the center of care and addresses the full range of mind, body, spirit and environmental influences that affect a person’s health.

Integrative Medicine treats both the patients immediate and long-term needs enhancing the ability of patients to not only get well but more importantly stay well.

META-Health is the Art and Science of Self-healing and a branch within the field of integrative medicine. It is revolutionizing holistic diagnosis and therapy by using your body’s healing intelligence and awareness of specific stress triggers, emotions and beliefs that are affecting your organ symptoms. META-Health is using the Organ-Stress-Emotion-Belief-Social Connection and the major 9 Points and Phases of Healing to remove blockages and allow self-healing to happen.”

30 world-renowned experts in Integrative Medicine will be speaking in this summit. Here is a screenshot I got from the same website of the Integrative Medicine Online World Summit showing some of your possible questions that may be covered.

Looks exciting and informative! I can’t wait. By the way, this entire summit is FREE so there is no reason for you not to sign up now and listen to what they have to say. Whenever something goes wrong in our bodies, we should stop just taking medicines to remove the symptoms. We must learn how to treat it at the source of the problem. As my yoga teacher always told us – The body has an innate ability to heal itself.

Review: Darren Rhodes’ Yoga Resource Practice Manual ebook

One great thing about owning a tablet or a smartphone is the fact that there is a plethora of yoga apps available. I’ve got over a dozen such apps on my ipad and I have quite a few on my Android smartphone. On my Kindle app, I also have quite a few yoga ebooks. Both the apps and the ebooks are great resources for when you can’t make it to a class or when traveling.

But if you need some kind of yoga bible, the Yoga Resource Practice Manual of Darren Rhodes is something to seriously consider.

Book cover

The version of the ebook I reviewed was for the ipad (using the Inkling app) so if you get the Android or web version, there may be some slight format differences.

Wellness afternoon with Juju Eats, Kick-Start Coffee, Lifefactory and Para’Kito

It was an afternoon well spent. An intimate group of women, most of whom are sporty and active, gathered at Juju Eats along Chino Roces Ave. Extension. We were treated to a feast and introduced to several health and wellness products.

But as they say in the Philippines, “Kain muna tayo!” (Let’s eat first!)

Our first experience was the food offerings of Juju Eats. This resto caters to everything healthy. They have a wide variety of classic salads with topping choices of all kinds. The couple behind Juju Eats is Kat and David Azanza. Their family is totally immersed in the world of alternative health since Kat’s parents, Eckard and Perla Rempe, are the founders of the popular wellness resort, The Farm at San Benito.

Great pains were taken to make the preparation as hygienic as possible. The food handlers all had their hair tied behind and secured with headbands. They wore hard plastic mouthguards, which reminded me of what my kids’ pediatric dentist used to use when cleaning my kids’ teeth. It was not a simple disposable face mask. It covered the nose and mouth completely. They also wore disposable gloves on both hands. Each ingredient had a separate container, with its own spoon, scoop or tongs. Somehow, their get-up made me feel so much more comfortable about how the salads and pasta were prepared.

Meet Mr. Yoga Mat at Kimpton Hotels

Will you be traveling any time around the U.S. this summer? Then, you may want to stay in a Kimpton Hotel.

Just yesterday, April 23, 2013, Kimpton Hotels launched “A yoga mat in every room”. It’s the hotel’s way of encouraging its guests to stay healthy and exercise while on vacation and business trips by putting a yoga mat in every guest room. According to this article from the Wall Street Journal, “Newly custom-designed Gaiam yoga mats with a playful butterfly motif will now be stocked in every guest-room closet and available for use at no charge whenever the itch for a stretch, pose or plank may strike.” They are not just run-of-the-mill mats! Custom-made Gaiam yoga mats at that!

Meet Mr. Yoga Mat!

I’ve always said that yoga was one of the most portable fitness and health activities around because all one had to pack into a backpack or suitcase was a rolled up yoga mat. On previous travels to our province, it was so easy for me to continue my home practice. No gym equipment. No rackets. No expensive rubber shoes. Just a yoga mat. And loose or stretchy clothing.

Now, there’s all the more reason to make yoga your home and travel workout routine! Kimpton Hotels started it already by eliminating the need to carry even your yoga mat around. Here are a few pics I took from their website.

The Wall Street Journal article also adds that the hotel offers complimentary “Roll-out Service” as well. “Kimpton will come to the guest’s room, meticulously roll out the mat and furnish extra towels, flavored water, an assortment of fresh fruit or an energizing mix of dried fruit and nuts, and set the TV to Kimpton’s complimentary on-demand yoga or Pilates channel for inspiration.”

To add more fun to their launch, here’s a video of sexy Mr. Yoga Mat at the hotel:
