Joint pains are not a condition of the elderly alone. Both young and the elderly can suffer from joint pains. Mobility can often be impaired by pain, stiffness, and discomfort in the joints, especially in the knee areas.

I know what this is like. I have injured myself more than once when I overdid my yoga practice and had to hobble around the house with a cane for several weeks till my injury healed. As I get older, I also realize that even with my yoga practice, my joints are no longer as lubricated and supple as they were decades ago. Intervention is often needed when one is very active or is moving into senior years.

Recently, I was introduced to a new collagen supplement that is being introduced in the Philippine market — Recogen. It is a collagen supplement meant to support healthy joints and muscles.

Here are some of the information I found online (1). The list of my sources are found at the end of this post.

What is Recogen?

Recogen is a nutritional and diet supplement with bioactive collagen peptides, which plays an important role in joint cartilage regeneration and building muscle mass. It is more easily absorbed by the body due to its shorter chains of amino acids. It is hydrolyzed, meaning it’s broken down with water, making it easily absorbed by the bloodstream upon digestion. The bioactive collagen peptides in Recogen are smaller to help the body absorb it more quickly and effectively.

What is in Recogen?

Recogen has two ingredients: Collagen hydrolysate (9000 mg) and Calcium lactate (1000mg).

Collagen hydrolysate, also known as bioactive collagen peptides, is collagen that has been broken down into more easily dissolvable amino acids. We know collagen is good for the skin but it is also an effective supplement that helps to nourish body tissues, cartilages, bones, tendons, ligaments, hair, nails and skin. It plays an important role in joint cartilage regeneration and muscle mass building. (2) The calcium lactate is an added ingredient for bone and joint health.

Recogen has an extremely low molecular weight — 3-6 kDaltons. Common glucosamine products are usually in the 16 kDaltons category. The difference? A much lower molecular weight means it is better absorbed into the bloodstream. (1)

Who would benefit most from taking Recogen?

Recogen is generally a good support for athletes’ muscle rehabilitation but it can also be helpful for older people beginning to experience joint pain issues or very active fitness buffs who may suffer joint pain from over-exerting themselves.

Here is a testimony I found online. Please remember that testimonies are anecdotal and not guarantees that they will always work the same way for everyone; however, they do serve to inspire.  A testimonial is someone’s success story.

How can Recogen help?

Multiple studies show that, when taken with regular exercise, collagen supplements help build more muscle mass versus exercising alone. Since athletes are more physically active, their muscles are more prone to getting worn out at an early age. Taking collagen supplements will help them with joint and muscle pain and in the regeneration and rebuilding of their muscle mass.

Recogen also gives users a boost in energy – it is high in nutrient and amino acids to enhance muscle strength and give you the boost you need to live an active lifestyle. Recogen is also enhanced with two crucial amino acids; glycine and proline. Glycine is an amino acid that helps stimulate muscle growth, while proline is used by the body to produce different proteins, including collagen.

Recogen prevents the risk of arthritis and other joint related conditions as it aids the regeneration of cartilage. A joint clinical trial carried out by Harvard Medical School and Tufts Medical Center in 2011 showed that Recogen can improve cartilage tissue in 48 weeks, helping prevent joint conditions such as osteoarthritis.

How is it taken?

I opened the box and discovered, quite pleasantly, that Recogen comes in conveniently packed sachets. This way, you can bring a sachet or two in your bag and take it any time of the day or night when you are out of the house.

Recogen is odorless and tasteless; it is also easily digested and readily absorbed (3). The recommendation is to take one sachet daily, before or after a meal, in 200ml of cool or warm milk, juice or water. One box of Recogen contains 30 sachets, good for one month.

Is Recogen safe to take?

Here is what the website of Nutraceutical Ingredients Pte Ltd (NCI Health) says about Recogen’s safety: “There are no known side effects. Recogen® is safe for long term consumption. Because of its low molecular weight, it is easily absorbed through the intestinal walls without causing stomach irritation. Some clinical studies have reported increased flatulence and diarrhea but such cases are extremely rare and isolated.

The German Institute for Drugs and Medicinal Products, the Consumer Protection Ministry and the World Health Organization (WHO) have all confirmed the safety of bioactive collagen peptides.”

Where can Recogen be obtained?
